A collision — even a minor one — is stressful. Knowing exactly what to do in the moment can protect your safety, your wallet and your insurance record. Here's a calm, step-by-step guide based on what we see every week at our Hounslow accident repair centre.
First two minutes: stop and stay safe
By law you must stop after any accident, no matter how minor. Switch on your hazards, get the vehicle off the road if it's safe to move, and put a warning triangle 45m behind on regular roads (not on motorways).
Check for injuries — call 999 if needed
If anyone is hurt, blocking the road, or refuses to give details, call 999. Otherwise, you have 24 hours to report the incident to police on 101.
Exchange details
Swap names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance details and registration numbers with every driver involved. If they refuse, photograph the number plate and contact the police.
Photograph everything
Take wide and close-up shots of all damage, the position of the vehicles, road markings, weather conditions and any visible injuries. Photos are worth thousands in a disputed claim.
Note witnesses
Get the name and contact number of anyone who saw the accident. Witnesses can settle a contested liability claim in your favour.
Call us — not just your insurer
Most drivers don't realise: you're free to choose your own repairer. Insurance-network garages aren't always best — independents like us often deliver higher quality with shorter waits. We'll handle the claim with your insurer on your behalf.
Save our 24/7 number in your phone now: 020 8570 1234. If you've had an accident, send us photos via WhatsApp and we'll quote you within an hour.
